The Power of Awareness: How to Identify What’s Holding You Back

Updated: Oct 30, 2024

In life, it’s easy to feel like you're stuck in a loop--repeating the same patterns, facing the same challenges, or failing to make progress toward your goals. Often, what's holding you back isn’t the world around you, but something within yourself. The first step in this journey is developing awareness. By cultivating awareness of what’s holding you back, you unlock the door to meaningful transformation.

Why Awareness is the First Step to Change

Awareness is like shining a flashlight into the dark corners of your mind. When you bring attention to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, you can finally see the subconscious patterns and limiting beliefs that control your life. Without awareness, it's impossible to change. It’s as if you’re driving with the brakes on and wondering why you're not getting anywhere. Once you know what’s hindering you, you can begin the work of overcoming those obstacles.

How Do You Know What’s Holding You Back?

It’s often tricky to identify what’s blocking you because these barriers can be deeply embedded in your mindset. These invisible barriers often fall into a few key categories:

1. Limiting Beliefs🛑

Limiting beliefs are stories you tell yourself about your capabilities, the world around you, or the future. Common examples include:

  • "I’m not good enough."

  • "Success is only for other people."

  • "If I try, I’ll fail."

These beliefs often stem from past experiences or messages you absorbed during childhood. They act like mental filters, shaping your perception of reality and holding you back from stepping into your full potential.

2. Fear of Failure😨

Fear of failure can be paralyzing. The voice inside your head that says, “What if I try and fail?” , "What if I embarrass myself", can keep you from taking any action at all. Fear is a powerful emotion, and while it serves to protect us in many ways, it can also be an obstacle when it's preventing you from trying new things or stepping out of your comfort zone.

3. Comfort Zone🛋️

The comfort zone is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s safe and familiar; on the other hand, it keeps you from growing. Growth requires discomfort, whether it's learning new skills, confronting difficult emotions, or taking risks. If you’ve been staying too comfortable for too long, you may find that your life is stagnant.

4. Negative Self-Talk💭

The way you talk to yourself has a significant impact on your mindset. If you’re constantly criticizing yourself or focusing on what you perceive as your shortcomings, you’re feeding the parts of your mind that believe you're incapable. Negative self-talk often fuels procrastination, low confidence, and feelings of unworthiness.

Steps to Cultivate Awareness of What’s Holding You Back

1. Practice Self-Reflection📝

Carve out quiet time to sit with your thoughts. Ask yourself reflective questions like:

  • What am I afraid of?

  • When do I feel the most stuck?

  • What limiting beliefs or patterns keep showing up in my life? Journaling can be a powerful tool for this practice. As you write, be honest with yourself. Awareness starts with recognizing the stories you're telling yourself.

2. Pay Attention to Your Triggers🎯

Emotional triggers are a goldmine of insight. When you feel frustrated, anxious, or defensive, there’s often something deeper going on beneath the surface. Track your emotional reactions and ask yourself, "What’s really going on here?" Over time, you’ll notice patterns that point to unresolved fears, beliefs, or emotional wounds.

3. Challenge Your Inner Critic🗣️

Your inner critic is the voice in your head that tells you you're not good enough. Catch it in action by listening to the negative thoughts running through your mind. Challenge these thoughts with logic. Ask yourself: Is this thought objectively true? or What would I say to a friend who thought this? Rewriting these negative narratives can help break the cycle of self-doubt.

4. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone🚀

The comfort zone can hold you back from living fully. Start small--push yourself just a little further than you normally would. Whether it’s having a difficult conversation or trying something new, you'll start to prove to yourself that you're capable of more than you think.

5. Seek Feedback🗨️

Sometimes, we’re blind to our own patterns, and others can see things we can't. Ask trusted friends, family, or mentors for feedback. They can often help you identify beliefs or behaviours that you may not be aware of but that are holding you back.

✨Transforming Awareness into Action✨

Once you’ve identified what's holding you back, it’s time to take action. Awareness without action won't bring the change you're seeking. Choose one area of your life where you’ve become aware of a barrier, and take small, consistent steps to overcome it. This might look like:

  • Challenging a limiting belief every day.

  • Setting goals that push you outside your comfort zone.

  • Practicing self-compassion and silencing negative self-talk.

Awareness Activity: Identify and Release Your Barriers🔍

Now let’s try a practical exercise to solidify your newfound awareness. This activity is designed to help you identify what’s holding you back and consciously release it.

Step 1: Create a List of Limiting Beliefs

On a sheet of paper, list out any negative or limiting beliefs you hold. These might include beliefs about yourself, your abilities, or your potential. If you're unsure, think about situations in your life where you felt stuck or hesitant, and ask yourself, "What belief was I holding onto in that moment?"

Step 2: Reflect on Their Origin

Next to each belief, write down where you think it came from. Was it a message from a parent, a past experience, or societal expectations? Understanding the origin can help you distance yourself from these beliefs and see them as just that--beliefs, not facts.

Step 3: Rewrite the Belief

For each limiting belief, write a positive, empowering affirmation to replace it. For example, if your belief is, "I’m not good enough," your new affirmation might be, "I am capable of achieving my goals." The key is to reframe your thinking in a way that serves your growth, not your fear.

Step 4: Release the Old Beliefs

Tear the list of limiting beliefs into small pieces and let them go in a waste basket, toss them in your fire place safely, or flush them down your toilet as a symbolic act of letting go. With each belief you destroy, visualize yourself freeing your mind from the constraints that have held you back.

Step 5: Commit to New Beliefs

Keep your list of new affirmations somewhere visible, and read them daily. The more you repeat these empowering beliefs, the more you’ll start to internalize them, allowing them to shape your thoughts, actions, and reality.

Final Thoughts💡

Awareness is a powerful tool for transformation. When you identify what’s holding you back, you take the first crucial step toward unlocking your true potential. Through self-reflection, challenging your thoughts, and taking conscious action, you can break free from limiting beliefs and step into a life of purpose and growth.

Remember, the path to awareness and change isn’t a one-time event. It’s a practice--a continuous journey of learning, growing, and evolving. The more you tap into your awareness, the more empowered you become to live life fully and freely.
